Qualifying

Hello and welcome to what promises to be a fascinating qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix. With Fernando Alonso fastest in all conditions yesterday, Ferrari could pose a real threat to Red Bull's qualifying dominance. But don't rule out the McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button or the Force India cars, who come into their own in the longer sections at Spa.

Mark Webber set the quickest time of free practice 3 this morning, with Lewis Hamilton second and Sebastian Vettel third. There is reportedly a 95% chance of showers this session, which should really spice things up!

Michael Schumacher is a past master at Spa, having won an amazing six times at the venue. But after his cheeky move on Rubens Barrichello in Hungary, don't expect big things this weekend as the Mercedes man has been slapped with a ten place grid penalty.

Rubens Barrichello will be a sentimental favourite, the Brazilian celebrating his 300th grand prix this weekend. He was 13th quickest this morning.

With five minutes remaining until Q1, sun is currently shining on the circuit but things can change so quickly in the Ardennes so fasten your seatbelts . . .

The pitlane is open and the session is underway. Rain is expected half way through the session.

Vitaly Petrov has gone spinning off in the dry at the top of the hill! Embarrassing for him and his team. A rookie error and the session has been red flagged because he is in a dangerous position. His qualifying session is over as he cannot re-start his car.

The session is underway again. The Spa weather radar says that rain will start between 14.10 and 14.15 local time, that's in six minutes. Everybody is now putting on the soft tyre. Bad luck for Button who has already put in one out lap on his softs.

And the rain is already starting to fall . . .

Michael Schumacher has dropped behind Jarno Trulli's Lotus and Adrian Sutil's Force India. It's more like a race than a qualifying session at the moment, brilliant stuff!

Carnage into Stavelot as Lucas di Grassi spins in the middle of the circuit. Hamilton gets a good lap in and goes quickest from team-mate Button.

Cars are snaking around on their slicks, struggling to get the tyres up to temperature. Vettel is just inside the top 17 at the moment with Sakon Yamamoto 13th. A great chance for the newcomers to surprise a few people. Vettel may have to risk intermediates.

As expected, Vettel has sprinted out on inters on a relatively empty circuit.

As it stands, Hamlton is quickest from Button, Vettel, Massa, Barrichello and Rosberg. A good lap from Vettel on the inters . . .

Track conditions look to be improving again. Sutil goes fifth. It is still too wet at Stavelot for slicks so most teams are still on inters. Lotus is gambling on slicks.

Robert Kubica goes quickest as Kobayashi clatters into the gravel at turn 8. His session is over.

Pedro de la Rosa also goes off into the gravel on his slicks. A disaster for Sauber.

Nico Rosberg goes fastest of all from compatriot Nico Hulkenberg. Schumacher goes fifth. Glock and Kovalainen are both through. That's the Q1 session over.

Blue sky greets the teams for the second qualifying session, Lewis Hamilton leading the cars out. The circuit is drying and the lap times should tumble with cars on slicks.

We understand Felipe Massa is on the soft tyre and Fernando Alonso on the hard.

Lewis Hamilton goes quickest from Mark Webber as Schumacher goes third.

Liuzzi and Hamilton both get things wrong at Stavelot and Alonso clatters across the gravel before rejoining. The circuit is still far from easy to drive.

Michael Schumacher goes fastest by half a second but the lap times should tumble further. Massa goes into the gravel at Rivage but does well to scramble out again.

Jenson Button goes quickest with two minutes remaining. Buemi is in with a shout of making it, Rosberg is struggling.

Session over and both Mercedes cars have missed out. Schumacher will line up 21st on the grid after his penalty and Rosberg 17th after a five-place penalty after changing his gearbox before qualifying. McLaren looks very strong at the moment.

Q3 is underway, Lewis Hamilton leading out Massa and Button.

Mark Webber goes fastest from Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel. It looks like the final session will stay dry.

The danger of speaking too soon at Spa is that you never know what it going to happen with the weather. It has started raining lightly! Great for Mark Webber, who is currently fastest from Kubica, Vettel and Hamilton.

Massa runs wide on the exit to Malmedy, ruining his lap. Alonso has a poor first sector so not good for Ferrari at the moment. Only one more chance for pole now.

Mark Webber takes pole position as Lewis Hamilton nails second with his final lap. Robert Kubica is third from Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button. The Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso are sixth and tenth respectively. Thanks for joining us and don't forget to log on for what promises to be a fantastic race tomorrow.
