Adam Freier has spoken of his anguish over an untimely injury during Sunday's Shute Shield Grand Final that prevented him from staking a claim for a Wallabies recall.

The 29-year-old hooker suffered a calf problem just 25 minutes into the climax of the Sydney club competition, with Wallabies coach Robbie Deans in attendance.

Deans has named an extended 43-man squad for the end-of-year tour and Freier, who had just returned from a long lay-off with a biceps tear sustained on Super 14 duty with the Waratahs, is not included after missing his chance to impress.

"It's devastating [because] I couldn't play in a [full] grand final, devastating [because] I worked so hard to get back," the 25-times-capped Freier told the Sydney Morning Herald. "You can look at it any way.

"For me at the moment, if there was a rock bottom, that would be it. That was my dream canvas - to play in that game the way it was played with Stu Dickinson refereeing pretty hard on the ball. It would have been perfect for me."
