An injury-time try from full-back Selica Winiata earned New Zealand women a 14-9 victory in the second Test in Hamilton and also secured the series win for the home side.

England lost the opening match at the weekend 29-10 but turned in a much-improved performance. Two penalties from Katy McLean gave a changed England side a 6-0 lead at the break even though they had to play with 14 after lock Joanne McGilchrist was sent to the sin-bin.

It stayed that way until the 70th minute when Portia Woodman went over for a try for New Zealand which was converted by Kelly Brazier. A late penalty from McLean put England back into a 9-7 lead only for Winiata to snatch the win deep into added time.

"We played really well in the first half and were really on top, but fair play to the Black Ferns," said England coach Gary Street. "They came back and got stuck into us. It was a fantastic advert for women's rugby. At the end of the day this result could have gone either way, and unfortunately it wasn't our way tonight. It is tough to take and we'll look at this and look to come back even stronger for the final Test because we don't want to go home without a win."

The third Test takes place in Pukekohe on Saturday where England will be looking for their first win in New Zealand since 2001.
