Ireland fly-half Jonathan Sexton has revealed he narrowly escaped having to eat a goldfish as part of his initiation at Top 14 side Racing Metro.

Sexton, who made his debut for the French giants on Friday night, and the club's other new signings - including his British & Irish Lions team-mates Dan Lydiate and Jamie Roberts - were recently given a goldfish to look after as part of their 'welcome' to the Colombes-based club.

Sexton revealed following his side's final pre-season hit-out in Lausanne, where they beat Premiership side Harlequins, that he had been expected to eat his pet - only for the club doctor to suggest that it might not be such a good idea.

"We were going to have to eat them until the doctor intervened, I'm glad that he did intervene," he said. "We had plenty of other stuff for the initiation, but it was good. It got us into the environment.
