The Royal Bank of Scotland, the headline sponsors of the Six Nations since 2003, has reported a pre-tax loss of £8.2 billion for 2013.

In January 2013 the bank - which lost £5.2 billion in 2012 - controversially extended the sponsorship through to the end of the 2017 competition. It was widely condemned for making such a commitment against a backdrop of staff and operational cuts to its core operation.

Although the amount of the sponsorship has not been revealed, it is believed to be in the region of £11 million a year.

At the time if defended the move, insisting the sponsorship "delivers significant value to our business and is the cornerstone of everything we do in rugby … it helps engage more effectively with customers and communities".
