A New Zealand schoolboy has achieved the remarkable feat of scoring 60 points in one match.

Matt Whaanga scored ten tries and kicked five conversions for South Otago High School as they overcame James Hargest College with a comprehensive 70-5 victory in Balclutha on New Zealand's South Island.

"It was pretty good. Things just seemed to go my way," Whaanga told the Otago Daily Times after his starring role in Sunday's win.

"I didn't really have a clue how many points I'd scored but I thought I might have been getting close to 10 tries."

Whaanga, a year 12 pupil who stands about 6ft 1in tall and weighs nearly 15st, said he thought his team-mates were "pretty happy" with his points tally.

Whaanga's father Adam, who is also the school's coach, said: "It just sort of happened. Most of the tries were due to good, clean ball. The forwards were giving him some great ball to work with. Matt was just on the end of good teamwork."

Whaanga's haul would have been higher had he not missed seven shots at goal. However, there was no time to rue missed penalties - Whaanga and his team-mates were out chopping firewood after the game in order to raise money for a tour to Australia.
