Caledonians win again in Canada
Vancouver
August 10, 2000

Roland Reid notched three tries for Glasgow Caledonians yesterday as the Reds swept the Pacific Coast Grizzlies aside at Wolfson Fields, Vancouver, in British Columbia's Coastal Cup tournament.

It was also a successful day for Mark McKenzie, the Scotland A stand-off who has joined the Reds after two seasons with Bourgoin-Jallieu in France. He scored 15 points with a try and five conversions on his debut for the Reds.

The Reds' 55-14 victory, with nine tries to one, followed up their 28-23 win against the British Columbia President's XV on Saturday. The Scots will complete their tournament programme against British Columbia on Saturday.

Reid was so quickly into the scoring action that he recorded his first try in the opening seconds of the game. The Reds won the kick-off, and from their sustained attack Ian McInroy's flip pass put the No.8 over. Rowen Shepherd followed up with a try soon afterwards when he broke through, chipped ahead, and collected to score between the posts for McKenzie to convert.

A penalty goal by Tim Dymmel, Grizzlies' stand-off, interrupted the flow, but the Reds' response was immediate as they scored from the restart, Craig Sangster putting James Craig over. A try by Fraser Stott from a close-range ruck gave the Reds a 22-3 lead after only 20 minutes, and finishing off a long spell of pressure, Stott's tapped penalty and Gordon Bulloch's scoring pass provided Reid with the opening for his second try. McKenzie converted.

Dymmel kicked two more penalty goals before half-time, reducing the interval margin to 29-9, but the Reds were back in scoring vein just two minutes into the second half, when sorties by McKenzie and Donnie Macfadyen released Shepherd for his second try. McKenzie again converted.

Grizzlies lock Dave Piedrahita scored the Americans' only try four minutes later, but the Reds had three more to complete the rout. McInroy finished off an attack up the left flank, McKenzie converting, and Reid's scrummage break put McKenzie over. When Reid repeated the ploy he finished it off himself, and McKenzie kicked the goal for 15 points in his debut match for the Reds.
