The non-sponsored sponsor's horse
Steven LynchSeptember 12, 2013
The 1991 Grand National, sponsored by Seagram, was won by a horse called Seagram. I know the sponsors didn't own the horse, but who did? asked Jeremy Broughton
The 1991 Grand National winner Seagram was owned by Sir Eric Parker, who also owned Topsham Bay, the winner of the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1992 and 1993.
Seagram, who was foaled in New Zealand, was trained by David Barons, and lived out his retirement alongside Topsham Bay at the Crimbourne Stud in Sussex, which Sir Eric set up after retiring as chief executive of Trafalgar House, a big property and investment company.
The 1991 National was the last of seven to be sponsored by Seagram, a massive drinks conglomerate based in Canada and best known for whisky. They were offered the chance to buy Seagram the horse, before the big race, but declined.
