Has anyone ever won the Formula One World Championship and the Indianapolis 500 in the same season? asked Carl Matthews

Only one man has ever done this - in 1965 the great Jim Clark became the first Briton to win the Indy 500, and completed his second F1 world title later in the year.

Four other drivers have completed the double during their careers: Graham Hill, the world champion in 1962 and 1968, won at the Brickyard in 1966; Mario Andretti won the Indy 500 in 1969 and the F1 title in 1978; Emerson Fittipaldi won the F1 title in 1972 and 1974, and the Indy 500 in 1989 and 1993; and Jacques Villeneuve won the F1 title in 1997, two years after winning at Indianapolis.
