Is Sebastian Vettel on course for the biggest victory by points in the world championship? asked Kevin Wallace

Sebastian Vettel already holds that record, after finishing 122 points ahead of Jenson Button (392-270) in 2011.

This year Vettel is currently 130 points ahead of Fernando Alonso, so given recent form - and you can't argue too much with seven wins in a row! - it does look likely that the record will go.

Such a margin has only been possible, though, since the major revamp in the points system in 2010. The biggest gap under the old 10-points-for-a-win system was recorded by Michael Schumacher in 2002, when he finished with 144 points to Rubens Barrichello's 77. If the current points system had been in place then, Schumacher would have finished 157 points in front of his Ferrari team-mate.

The biggest percentage difference between first and second was 48.1% in 1992, when Nigel Mansell collected 108 points, while the world championship runner-up, his Williams team-mate Riccardo Patrese, scored 56.
