- Ask Steven
Black and no Gold at the Olympics
Roger Black won two Olympic relay medals, sadly neither of them gold. Who holds the record for the 4x400m relay? asked Terry Cantwell
Roger Black won bronze in the 4x400m relay at Barcelona in 1992, and silver at Atlanta in 1996. Two other Britons, Du'aine Ladejo and Mark Richardson, were also part of those two squads.
Only two athletes have ever won two gold medals at the long relay: unsurprisingly, since the USA has won the event on 16 of the 23 times it's been raced, they're both Americans - Steve Lewis (1988-92) and Jeremy Wariner (2004-08).
But there is only one man who has won three medals in the 4x400m relay, and he isn't American: the long-lasting Chris Brown was part of the Bahamas' bronze-medal team at Sydney in 2000, took silver at Beijing in 2008, and ran the first leg for the eventual champions in London in 2012.
The Bahamas have only ever won three medals in this event, and Brown was part of all three teams. There are 11 other men who have won two medals in this event.
