Tour confusion

I was confused to see a European Tour golf event on the TV at the end of November. I thought the 2013 season had finished? asked Simon Wharton

The event I imagine you saw was the South African Open, held near Johannesburg, which resulted in the first big win for the Danish golfer Morten Orum Madsen.

The South African Open is one of several events which are co-sanctioned by both the Sunshine (formerly South African) Tour and the European Tour - although confusingly it counts towards the 2013 Sunshine standings while kicking off the 2014 European ones.

I've always been rather amused that the European Tour these days starts neither in Europe nor in the year specified in the title! The first five events of the "2014" European Tour will actually be held in 2013, four of them in South Africa and one in Hong Kong.

In all there will be around 20 tournaments - including the US Masters and two of the World Golf Championship events - before the European Tour finally touches down in Europe, for the Madeira Islands Open in Portugal in May 2014.
