Serving up a grand slam double

Who was the last man to win the singles and doubles at the same grand slam tournament? And who was the last to win the mixed doubles as well? asked Ken Mitchell

I think you've spotted the rather sad fact that it's very rare for any of the top male tennis players to play much doubles these days.

The last man to win two titles at the same grand slam event was the Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who won the singles and doubles (with Daniel Vacek) at the French Open in 1996.

Michael Stich won the men's singles at Wimbledon in 1991, and the doubles there the following year, partnering John McEnroe. It's even rarer for a leading man to bother with the mixed doubles: the last to win all three titles at the same grand slam was the Australian Neale Fraser, who won the singles, the doubles (with Roy Emerson) and the mixed (with Margaret duPont) at the US Championships in 1960.

The last man to do it at Wimbledon was another Australian, Frank Sedgman, in 1952. The last woman to achieve the triple was Martina Navratilova - rather surprisingly, for the only time in her long career - at the 1987 US Open.
