As we all hold our breath for Michael Schumacher, I was wondering whether he still holds the record for the most points in F1? asked Brian Field

Michael Schumacher collected 1556 points in his long F1 career, which was a record until late last year, when Fernando Alonso passed it: he had 1606 by the end of 2013.

Sebastian Vettel is hot on his fellow German's heels now with 1451, and next comes Lewis Hamilton with 1102, 30 more than Jenson Button.

The catch is, of course, that Schumacher amassed most of his points (all bar 197 of them) before the radical change in 2010 which rewarded a win with 25 points rather than ten.

By the end of 2009 Schumacher had 1369 points, with Alain Prost next on 798.5.

Since 2010 Vettel has scored 1328 points, Alonso 1029, and Mark Webber 878. If the current points system had always been in force, Schumacher would have collected no fewer than 3872, with Prost a long way adrift in second place with 2481.5; Vettel wouldn't yet be in the top ten.
