Formula One and the silver screen
Is Rush, the new film about the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda in 1976, the best film made about motor racing? asks Martin Neill
I haven't seen it yet (although it is on my to-do list!), so can't really comment. But I have read some good reviews, so it must be up there, especially since films about F1 are few and far between - there are more about American motor racing.
There was the recent semi-documentary Senna, but that was intrinsically sad because you knew how it was going to end.
Going back a bit, there was an ambitious attempt to capture the spirit of the day in the 1966 movie Grand Prix, which starred the French heart-throb Yves Montand and the American James Garner as his upstart American rival. Much of the film was shot during that year's races, with the real drivers having cameo roles.
"At the premieres I attended in New York and London," wrote Graham Hill, "I could never understand why, whenever I appeared, people roared with laughter."
