A recent story on espnf1 talked about Formula E racing. But what exactly is it? asked James Thompson

Formula E is a new series - run by the FIA so highly official! - for electric-powered cars. The series, which is expected to feature several ex-F1 drivers, has ten scheduled races, all of them around city-centre circuits.

The first season is due to start in Beijing, in China, on September 14 this year, and end in London on June 27, 2015.

According to the FIA's website, the "E" stands for the competition's three core values of "Energy, Environment and Entertainment". It should certainly be an interesting - and quieter - experiment.
