A Q of world champions
Is Scott Quigg the only world boxing champion whose surname begins with Q? asked James Harrison
Scott Quigg from Bury was recognised as the WBA's super-bantamweight champion in 2013, since when he has fought a draw with Yoandris Salinas of Cuba and (last November) stopped Argentina's Diego Oscar Silva in the second round in Manchester. Quigg is due to face a former champion, Nehomar Cermeno of Venezuela, in April.
I've found six former world champions whose surnames began with Q.
Dwight Muhammad Qawi - the American who started life as Dwight Braxton - held various versions of the world light-heavyweight title between 1981 and 1989.
Robert Quiroga, another American, held the IBF junior-bantamweight title in 1990, while Francisco Quiroz from the Dominican Republic was the WBA's junior-flyweight champion for ten months from May 1984.
Turning to the WBO, Mexico's Jose Quirino was their super-flyweight champion during 1992, while Carlos Quintana (Puerto Rico) held their welterweight title for a few months in 2008. But probably the most distinguished Q-champion was Ike Quartey, from Ghana, who held the WBA welterweight title between 1994 and 1998.
There's also an honourable mention for Quincy Taylor (the WBC middleweight champion 1995-96), and for Rocky Marciano's sledgehammer right-hand punch, which he liked to call Suzie Q.
