Derby double
Steven LynchMarch 27, 2014
Peter Chapple-Hyam trained two Derby winners, 15 years apart. Was this a record? asked Jim Robinson
Peter Chapple-Hyam's two Epsom Derby winners came with Dr Devious, in 1992, and Authorized, 15 years later.
It's a difficult one to check, but I believe the biggest gap between two Derby winners for a trainer is actually 27 years, by Alec Taylor senior, who won with Teddington in 1851 and Sefton in 1878.
More recently, John Dunlop won with Shirley Heights in 1978 and Erhaab in 1994, so beats Chapple-Hyam by a year.
Another notable double was achieved last year when Treve, trained by Criquette Head, won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Her previous success in the big race at Longchamp had come 34 years previously, with Three Troikas in 1979.
