Brits reign supreme at the Crucible

The snooker world championship seems to be pretty much a British preserve. How many overseas players have won it? asked Michael Setters

Since the snooker world championship moved to The Crucible in Sheffield in 1977, only three non-British players have won it: the Canadian Cliff Thorburn beat Alex Higgins in the final in 1980, and the Australian Neil Robertson beat Graeme Dott in 2010.

The third overseas winner Ken Doherty, the 1997 champion, who was born in Dublin (the previous Irish winners, Alex Higgins and Dennis Taylor, were from Northern Ireland).

Before the Crucible era, the Australian Horace Lindrum won the title in 1952, after a dispute meant that only he and Clark McConachy, a New Zealander, were the only two players to contest the championship.
