How low can United go?Steven LynchApril 26, 2014
It looks like Manchester United will finish seventh in the Premier League this season. When was the last time they finished so low down? asked Alan Carter.
Since the Premier League was established in 1992-93, Manchester United have either finished first (13 times), second (five) or third (three, most recently in 2004-05).
In 1989-90, however, they finished 13th in the First Division, although winning the FA Cup made up for that a little; the previous season they'd ended up 11th in the :League.
Those with long memories will remember the 1973-74 season when, to general astonishment, Manchester United were relegated - the drop was confirmed, in an odd coincidence, by a cheeky back-heeled goal from the former United favourite Denis Law, by then playing for his old club Manchester City.
Law was aware his goal had condemned his old club to the Second Division: "Denis has done it!" said the TV commentator Gerald Sinstadt. "And no elation there at all."
Manchester United bounced back by winning the Second Division in 1974-75, and have been in the top flight ever since.
