A trophy life for Hamilton

You might think that, after winning your home grand prix in front of thousands and thousands of your fans, the trophy wouldn't really matter too much.

Wrong.

After racing to a brilliant victory at Silverstone on Sunday, Lewis Hamilton brought a sportsman's worst nightmare on himself by bad-mouthing the race sponsors.

Santander, sponsors of the British Grand Prix, provided the trophies for the podium presentation and it turns out Hamilton wasn't impressed with what they brought to the party.

As reported by the Times, Hamilton turned his nose up at what chairman of Santander UK Lord Burns handed him after two-and-a-half hours on the track.

According to the newspaper, Hamilton's thoughts on his prize were that it was "plastic, falling apart and worth about ten quid."

He immediately realised his faux-pas and told reporters: "Don't write anything too bad … too late."

It could have been worse though, Lewis. You could have once been a brand ambassador for the Spanish bank…oh.

However, Hamilton was given the coveted Royal Automobile Club (RAC) trophy to show off to the crowd (and the press) before it was packed off back to London along with its security team.

The gold cup was awarded to the winner of the first British Grand Prix to be held at Silverstone, Maserati driver Luigi Villoresi, in 1948.

Unfortunately for Hamilton, though, it is the only trophy on the race calendar that he can't take home!
