Youth taking over the world
Steven LynchJuly 10, 2014
Julian Green, who scored the USA's goal against Belgium, is only 19. Is he the youngest player ever to score at the World Cup? asked Tony Barrett.
The Bayern Munich winger Julian Green is the youngest scorer so far at the 2014 World Cup - he's a few weeks younger than Divock Origi, who scored for Belgium against Russia - but six other players found the net at a younger age in earlier finals tournaments.
Pride of place goes to the one and only Pele, who was only 17 when he scored six goals in Brazil's triumphant 1958 campaign, including two in the final against Sweden.
Manuel Rosas, 18, scored two penalties for Mexico against Argentina in 1930; he was about three years younger than Michael Owen, who was also 18 when he netted against Romania and Argentina in 1998.
The only other 18-year-olds to score in the World Cup finals are Nicolae Kovacs (Romania, 1930), Dmitri Sychev (Russia, 2002), and someone called Lionel Messi for Argentina against Serbia & Montenegro in 2006 - whatever happened to him?
