Has any golf course staged the Open Championship just once? asked Paul Sanderson
Of the 14 golf courses to have staged the Open Championship, only two have done so just the once. Royal Portrush, in Northern Ireland, held the tournament in 1951, when Britain's Max Faulkner won the only Open to be held outside the British mainland.
It was reported recently that Portrush would stage the event again soon, possibly in 2019, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.
The other course to stage the Open once was Prince's, at Deal in Kent, back in 1932, when the winner was the American Gene Sarazen.
Prince's is next door to Royal St George's at Sandwich, which has staged the Open on 14 occasions so far, most recently in 2011. Just down the road is the Royal Cinque Ports Club in Deal, where the 1909 and 1920 Opens were played.
Turnberry has staged four Opens so far (the last in 2009), Musselburgh six (but none since 1889), Carnoustie seven (last in 2007), Royal Troon eight (last in 2004),Royal Birkdale nine (last in 2008), Royal Lytham 11 (last in 2012), Hoylake 12 (including last week), Muirfield 16 (last in 2013), Prestwick 24 (many early ones, but none since 1925) and St Andrews 28 (with the 29th to come next year).
