Serena Williams could win her sixth US Open on Sunday. Has anyone ever won more than that? asked Kim Parker

A sixth title would put Serena Williams level with Chris Evert, who won the US Open every year from 1975 to 1978, and again in 1980 and 1982.

Evert currently holds the Open-era record, but there are two players from the amateur age with more wins. The great American Helen Wills Moody collected seven US titles between 1923 and 1931, while the Norwegian-American Molla Bjurstedt-Mallory won eight between 1915 and 1926, including in 1917, which is sometimes not considered an official event (the US National Championships were renamed the "National Patriotic Tournament" for that year only, as America was at war in Europe).

Three men have won the US singles seven times: Richard Sears (the first seven championships, 1881-87), William Larned (1901-11), and Bill Tilden (1920-29). Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer all won five titles in the Open era.
