The upcoming Ryder Cup is being held at Gleneagles. How often has it been played in Scotland? asked Kevin Mohun-Smith

Rather surprisingly, the Ryder Cup has only been held in Scotland once before - back in 1973, when the United States beat Great Britain and Ireland 19-13 at Muirfield. It was 8-8 going into the final day's singles matches, but then the strong American team pulled away (there were two lots of eight singles matches played in those days).

There have only been two other occasions when a home Ryder Cup match has not been held in England: in 1997 the European team captained by Seve Ballesteros won in Valderrama, in Spain, while in 2006 Europe won at the K Club, in Kildare in Ireland. The 2018 Ryder Cup is due to be played in France.
