Manchester United fans famously called for the sacking of David Moyes with an airborne banner over Old Trafford last season, claiming Sir Alex Ferguson's successor was the "wrong one".

United's board, alarmed by the club's slide to seventh in the league, eventually heeded the banner's message and Moyes was dismissed a month later.

Now United fans are aiming to put their aerial expertise to use once more, this time calling for the return of one the club's favourite sons - Cristiano Ronaldo.

A supporters' group is planning to fly a banner during Real Madrid's next match, begging the Portuguese forward to "come home".

Ronaldo, 29, left United in 2009 after spending six years at Old Trafford, but there has been increasing speculation over recent months that he could soon return to the club after growing disillusioned with life at the Santiago Bernabeu.

United Reel, a group of "die-hard Manchester United fans from every corner of the globe," are determined to help lure Ronaldo back to Old Trafford and claim they will fly a light aircraft over Villarreal's Estadio El Madrigal during their La Liga match against Madrid on Saturday, displaying the message "Come Home Ronaldo."

"United Reel have teamed up with their affiliated official Manchester United Supporters Clubs - MUSC United Arab Emirates, MUSC Lebanon and MUSC Egypt to show a 'United' front to help bring Ronaldo home," the group said in a statement.

"Members from all over the world have donated their own money and resources to fund a mind game message, flown by plane during the upcoming Villarreal v Real Madrid football match in a bid to demonstrate to Cristiano Ronaldo how much the United Faithful still love and support him.

"With the current uncertainty regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's future, United Reel deem it essential that the player, can not only feel, but see how much the fans still love him and how proud they are of his achievements since he left Manchester United

"United Reel has active supporters on every continent of the world and we are all united by our love for Cristiano both as a football player and as a person. We stand united in our views and we won't stop until we bring Ronaldo home."

Ronaldo has been in fine form for Carlo Ancelotti's side recently and scored four goals in Real Madrid's 5-1 victory over Elche on Tuesday to take him above David Villa's tally of 185 and into joint-tenth with former Madrid star Carlos Santillana in the Spanish league's all-time scorer list.
