Jordan Spieth played in the 2014 Ryder Cup aged 21. Is he the youngest to appear in it? asked Neil Harrison

Only one American Ryder Cup player has been younger than Jordan Spieth, who was 21 in July - that was Horton Smith, who was 20 during the 1929 competition at Moortown in Yorkshire.

Smith later found fame as the inaugural winner of the US Masters, in 1934.

However, quite a few European golfers have played in it at a more tender age, the youngest of all being 19-year-old Sergio Garcia in 1999.

Nick Faldo (1977), Paul Way (1983), Bernard Gallacher (1969) and Ken Brown (1977) were all 20 when they made their Ryder Cup debuts.
