Replay glory

I noticed that Glenn Hoddle scored in the FA Cup final and the replay of 1982. How rare is this - and has anyone done it since? asked Chris Porter

The only man since Glenn Hoddle for Spurs in 1982 to score in both the FA Cup final and the replay after a draw was Ian Wright, for Arsenal against Sheffield Wednesday in 1993.

That was the last year it was possible, as after that the FA decided to do away with replays and ensure the Cup was decided on the day with a penalty shootout.

The first man to score in both the final and replay was Henry Renny-Tailyour, for Royal Engineers against Old Etonians in 1875, the fourth year of the FA Cup. Renny-Tailyour, who remains the only man to play football and rugby for Scotland, also played county cricket for Kent: maybe it helped him that his FA Cup finals were played at The Oval.

In 1901 both Sandy Brown of winners Spurs and Fred Priest of runners-up Sheffield United scored in the final and replay.

And Mick Jones reprised Priest's record in 1970, when he scored for Leeds United in the final and replay - but they still lost, to Chelsea.
