A record for Hamilton?

Lewis Hamilton ended up winning the world title with 384 points. Is this a record? asked Robert Harris

Lewis Hamilton's final haul of 384 points was boosted by the controversial award of double points for the last race in Abu Dhabi - and it still couldn't quite propel him to the record, not that he will be too worried about that. Sebastian Vettel finished with 397 points in 2013, and 392 in 2011.

Such high totals have only been possible since 2010, when the value of a win was hiked to 25 points from ten. The pre-2010 record was 148 points, by Michael Schumacher in 2004; he also collected 144 in 2002. If the current system had been in place in 2004 then Schumacher would have ended up with 367 points (or 373 if double points had been awarded for the last race, in which he finished seventh).

Fernando Alonso won with 134 points in 2006, and 133 in 2005. The first man to score 100 points in a season was Nigel Mansell, with 108 in 1992.
