Where did Will Stevens, who drove a Caterham in Abu Dhabi, come from? asked Leslie Foster

Will Stevens, who was born in Essex in June 1991, picked up the spare Caterham drive after the Swede Marcus Ericsson (who has signed for Sauber in 2015) terminated his contract with the team following the problems that saw them miss the United States and Brazilian Grands Prix.

Stevens started his single-seater racing career in 2006, in Formula Junior and Formula Renault 2.0. In 2012 he joined the Formula Renault 3.5 ranks, finishing 12th in his first year but fourth in 2013. That year he also signed as a test driver for Caterham.

In October 2014 Stevens joined Marussia as a test driver, after another reasonable season (sixth overall ) in Formula Renault 3.5. But had few opportunities to sit behind the wheel before Marussia dropped out of F1 and went into administration (it looks very much as if they won't return; the team's equipment, including the cars, is being auctioned off in December).

He ended up 17th in Abu Dhabi, not a bad effort in an uncompetitive car. "Felt better in the car with every lap," he tweeted. "Hope this is the first of many races in F1 and looking forward to what the future brings!"
