Who has won the most golf tournaments without ever winning a major? asked Carl Gledhill

Colin Montgomerie won 31 tournaments on the European Tour between 1989 and 2007, but famously never won a major. He was second in five, which is a record for someone who never won one.

Monty did win a senior major (for the over-50s) last year, though - the Senior PGA, at Harbor Shores in Michigan - and liked the feeling so much he promptly won another one, the Senior US Open at Oak Tree in Oklahoma.

Montgomerie won nine additional non-tour events worldwide, plus five senior events (including those two majors).

The American record is held by Harry Cooper - who was actually born in Surrey - who won 31 events on the PGA Tour between 1923 and 1939. He never won a major either, but was second in four, including both the Masters and the US Open in 1936.
