You know you've made it in life when you have to release a Hollywood-style statement to announce the end of your relationship.

And that's exactly what Cristiano Ronaldo did on Tuesday as he revealed that his five-year romance to Russian model Irina Shayk is over.

"After dating for five years, my relationship with Irina Shayk has come to an end," the Real Madrid said in a written statement sent exclusively to the Associated Press. "We believed it would be best for both of us to take this step now."

Ronaldo said he was making the statement to end speculation about their relationship and his private life. "I wish Irina the greatest happiness," he said. He gave no further details.

Speculation mounted when Shayk failed to show up at the ceremony for the Ballon d'Or, which Ronaldo won, while some clever spark noticed she had unfollowed him on Twitter.
