I noticed that Earth Summit won both the English and Scottish Grand Nationals. How many other horses have done this? asked Mark Smithson

Earth Summit won the Grand National at Aintree in 1998, four years after winning the Scottish National at Ayr. Earth Summit also won the Welsh National, at Chepstow, in 1997 - a unique treble.

Six other horses have won both the English and Scottish Nationals, although the legendary Red Rum is the only one to do so in the same year - 1974.

The first to complete the double was Music Hall, who won the Scottish National in 1920 and the English one two years later. Since then it's also been achieved by Sergeant Murphy (Scottish 1922, English 1923), Kellsboro' Jack (English 1933, Scottish 1935 - the only one to do it this way round), Merryman II (Scottish 1959, English 1960) and Little Polveir (Scottish 1987, English 1989).
