Which players have won the most singles and doubles titles at the Australian Open? asked Chris Hamilton

Pride of place goes to the powerful Australian Margaret Court, who won her home singles title on no fewer than 11 occasions between 1960 and 1973, the first seven in a row. After tennis went open in 1968 she won it four more times, but Serena Williams has now won five titles in the Open era.

Roy Emerson won the men's singles in Australia six times between 1961 and 1967, while the record since the Open era began in 1968 is four, by Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Another Australian, Adrian Quist, won 10 successive men's doubles titles - a record that is even more remarkable than it sounds, as that run was interrupted by the war, when the tournament was not played. Quist won every year from 1936 to 1940, then again from 1946 to 1950. His last eight titles were shared with John Bromwich.

Quist also won the singles title three times, giving him 13 titles overall, the men's record - but he is eclipsed in that regard by Nancye Wynne Bolton, another Aussie, whose total of 20 titles included six singles, ten doubles and four mixed championships between 1936 and 1952. The Open era record is Martina Navratilova's 12 - three singles, eight doubles and one mixed.
