I read that Hurricane Fly had a record number of Grade One race wins. Which horse had the previous record? asked Simon Woodfield
The superb Irish hurdler Hurricane Fly recently completed his 21st Grade One race victory, beating off his rival Jezki to win the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown in December for the fourth time.
He then defeated Jezki at the same racecourse to claim a record fifth Irish Champion Hurdle in January - and take his Grade One race wins tally to 22 overall.
Hurricane Fly, who's now 11, has won the Irish Champion Hurdle four times, and the English one twice. His sire was Montjeu, who won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1999.
The previous Grade One record was 16, shared by the five-time King George Chase winner Kauto Star, and the American horse John Henry, whose victories included two in the prestigious Arlington Million.
