Julio Cesar Chavez remains the WBC middleweight champion after he stopped Peter Manfredo Jnr in the fifth round on Saturday evening.

Chavez was making his maiden title defence at 160lbs against Manfredo, and he delivered an impressive assault midway through the contest to add to his reputation.

Manfredo, attempting to capitalise on the second title bout of his career, made the better start in Houston, throwing more punches than his adversary. However, it was always Chavez showing the greater accuracy and power as the contest progressed.

By round five it was clear that the champion's superiority would stop the fight inside the distance, and a big right hand sparked the beginning of the end. Chavez wobbled Manfredo, and then unleashed a series of follow-up shots as his rival covered up.

Manfredo managed to deflect many of Chavez's punches, but there was nothing coming back to provide reason for referee Laurence Cole to allow the bout to continue. Cole stepped in at 1.52 of round five to hand Chavez the victory.

Manfredo later confirmed Saturday's defeat would be the last fight of his career.
