Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye has confirmed he is in talks with Vitali Klitschko over a March 2012 bout - but says any deal remains a long way from completion.

Haye retired from boxing in October at the age of 31, with the caveat that he could be coaxed back into the ring for a battle with one of the Klitschkos. Haye lost on points to Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali's brother, during July.

Adam Booth, Haye's manager, was coy when probed on the topic earlier this month, saying discussions had been held but, as far as he was concerned, "the fight isn't happening and David is retired".

However, Haye - who reportedly is willing to drop his pay demands if required - appears to be ruling nothing out.

"I haven't seen a contract but there's definitely talks going on," he told the BBC's Hardtalk programme. "I said before I retired I would love that fight and there's a date in March that's already been talked about."

WBC champion Vitali is expected to have one or two more fights before retiring to concentrate on politics in his native Ukraine.
