Amir Khan has confirmed an appeal has been lodged with regard to his controversial defeat to Lamont Peterson.

Khan lost his WBA and IBF light-welterweight belts to his American opponent following a controversial points defeat in Washington DC. The Brit was docked two points for pushing his opponent, which he feels cost him the fight, and an examination of the rulebook has prompted Khan to appeal.

"The appeal has gone to both governing bodies and we should get the verdict in the next 10 days," Khan is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail. "We had to do it, because so many wrong things happened, not least being docked points.

"We have checked the rulebook, and pushing an opponent away does not carry a point deduction, as happened to me. Also, the referee should have stopped me and warned me I was about to lose a point.

"It is important that justice is done or fighters will stop going to Washington."

Irrespective of the appeal outcome, Khan is hopeful of securing a rematch with Peterson on neutral ground.
