Quigg climbs off canvas to stop Arthur

Scott Quigg came through the first crisis of his career to defend his British super-bantamweight title with an eighth-round stoppage of Jamie Arthur.

Quigg came into the fight protecting a perfect 23-0 record, with his camp already talking about future world-title fights, but he was knocked down in the fourth round before storming back to take the contest.

Quigg was well on top heading into the eighth and landed a stiff body shot, which prompted the referee to call an end to the fight.

It was a cagey opening, with Quigg surprisingly circumspect. Arthur took full advantage of Quigg's cagey display by landing a crunching left that put the champion on the floor.

Quigg took the eight count, absorbed some further shots before landing a fine left of his own towards the end of the fourth.

As the fight entered the middle rounds, Arthur started to feel the pace and Quigg drew confidence from seeing his rival breathe heavily. Big single punches followed by rapid combinations had Arthur rocking and he was cut badly in the seventh.

The fight had turned Quigg's way by the start of the eighth and he landed a huge body shot which prompted referee Mark Green to call off the contest.

The decision did not sit well with the Arthur camp, as they vented their fury at the official, but in truth Quigg was well on his way to victory when the fight was stopped.
