Khan v Garcia will have WBA title on line

Amir Khan will have the chance to reclaim the WBA light-welterweight crown when he meets Danny Garcia on July 14, according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

Khan, 25, surrendered the WBA and IBF titles to Lamont Peterson in December 2011 - but the American's victory was subsequently discredited when it emerged testosterone pellets were inserted into his hip prior to fight night.

Following that revelation, Golden Boy wrote to the organisations in question and asked for Khan to be reinstated as champion. While it seems the WBA has stopped short of doing that, it will allow Khan another chance to recapture the 140lbs belt.

"I've got verbal confirmation that the WBA is going to have Amir fight for the WBA title, so that's that," said Schaefer to ringtv.com. "As it relates to the WBC, we already know that the fight is also going to be for the WBC title [Garcia holds that title] so their fight will definitely be for two belts."

Khan was due to meet Peterson for a second time during May, but that battle was scrapped when news of Peterson's failed drug test broke.

Garcia, the 24-year-old American, won the WBC title with a unanimous points win over veteran Mexican Erik Morales in March. The bout with Khan, at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, will be his first defence.
