Oscar: Khan still hunting Mayweather
Khan's suspect chin was brutally exposed once again in Las Vegas, as he was demolished by Garcia - with the defeat appearing to put paid to any plans to step up to 147lbs.
There have been calls from respected figures in the game for Khan to retire. He has scoffed at such suggestions and De La Hoya, whose Golden Boy act as the 25-year-old's promoters, feels he can get back on a trail leading to a meeting with Mayweather Jr.
"I believe the Mayweather fight isn't dead as Amir Khan is a tremendous boxer and tremendous puncher," De la Hoya said.
"We get him another win or two wins and he's back in the picture because of his talent and his qualities.
"Amir Khan, he will be back. No question about that, Amir will be back."
