Groves delighted to impress De La Hoya

British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion George Groves declared his main objective had been attained after his performance against Francisco Sierra was hailed by Oscar De La Hoya.

Groves strolled through a potentially perilous assignment against Sierra in San Jose on Saturday, stopping him in the sixth round - despite sustaining a nasty cut.

His performance drew praise from De La Hoya, the former six-weight world champion who now runs Golden Boy Promotions. "Groves, a star is born…I do want to see more of George Groves," he tweeted.

Groves, who is promoted by Frank Warren in the UK, was looking to raise his profile in America against Sierra.

"There is loads of room for improvement, but for me the main thing was to come out here, get some solid rounds under my belt, do a job properly - and hopefully win over some support," Groves told boxingscene.com.

"This fighter had some support but I think in the end I won over a few fans and Golden Boy were very impressed and that was my main objective."

Meanwhile, it has been announced the cut sustained against Sierra will stop Groves from fulfilling a planned September fight.
