Manny Pacquiao should fight Miguel Cotto next because it would increase the chances of a bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr, according to Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach.

Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, has confirmed that the Filipino will return to action in December, rather than in November as originally planned.

Juan Manuel Marquez is reportedly close to being confirmed as Pacquiao's opponent, with the Mexican being chosen ahead of Cotto and Timothy Bradley.

However, Roach still hopes that a resolution can be reached with Cotto, who lost to Mayweather on points in his most recent bout.

"Bradley, I feel there's no need for that fight because the whole word knows we beat him," Roach told examiner.com. "Marquez, we've already done three times.

"Cotto makes the most sense to me because he just went the distance with Mayweather. If we can knock him out again at 150lbs, which he said yes to, and if we could knock him out again [Pacquiao has already beaten Cotto once before], our negotiating power with Mayweather would be a little stronger.

"I think it's the most sensible fight out there but Marquez is closer to being made though, because Cotto wants more money."
