Boxing mourns death of Corrie Sanders
Corrie Sanders, who beat Wladimir Klitschko in 2003 to win the WBO world heavyweight title, has died at the age of 46 after being shot during a robbery.
Sanders made a telling impact on the world of boxing nine years ago in Hanover, stopping Klitschko in the second round of their world title fight. He was later beaten by Wladimir's brother, Vitali.
North West Police Brigadier Thulani Ngubane told Press Association Sport that South African Sanders was shot while attending his nephew's birthday. He was rushed to hospital but died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Brigadier Ngubane said: "I can confirm Corrie and his family were celebrating his nephew's birthday, turning 21, and enjoying a meal last night. In the midst of the celebrations, at about 7.45pm in the evening, about three suspects came in.
"They were planning to commit an armed robbery. Then in the armed robbery they shot randomly. Corrie was shot in the hand and also the stomach.
"They fled with a digital camera and also a handbag of one of the people who was in the restaurant."
Sanders finished his professional boxing career with a professional record of 42-4, with 31 knockout victories.
