Ward: Khan already better under Hunter

Andre Ward is impressed with Amir Khan's progress since the former WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion began working with trainer Virgil Hunter.

Khan had lost his final two fights under former trainer Freddie Roach before the pair officially split in September, after which Roach criticised Khan's inability to contain his offensive style.

But with Khan due to return to the ring to face Carlos Molina at the LA Sports Arena on December 15, undefeated super-middleweight champion Ward believes the Bolton native is developing into a well-rounded boxer since teaming up with Hunter.

"I think Amir, in my opinion, is one of the best offensive fighters in the game," Ward told Fighthype. "He has his own style, but it's effective. I think if he keeps getting a concept of defence, I think it's going to enhance his offense and I think he's just going to be really hard to beat.

"I've been around maybe two or three sessions and from what I see, Amir is working hard and he's putting in the time. When you got a new coach and a new fighter, it takes time."

Ward is also set for a return to action, with negotiations for a potential January 26 clash with former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik ongoing, at which point he expects to become Hunter's primary focus.

But while Ward views himself as the priority fighter in Hunter's stable as he chases world-beating pound-for-pound status, the American does not envisage the trainer's schedule compromising either fighter.

"The bottom line is this, and I say this with the utmost humility: I'm the No. 1 fighter in our stable, period, and the guys that come along and that train with Virg, they understand that.

"Virg runs a tight ship. He knows how I like things done and vice versa. So, you know, that kind of thing is not a problem and we kind of do things in training camp, we try to be prompt, we try to be about our business.

"You have that problem when maybe guys are training at the same time, but that's not going to be the case here."
