Brook could fight for world title in Sheffield
Kell Brook has not given up on fighting Devon Alexander for his IBF world title but admits he is eyeing up a consolation bout, possibly in his home town of Sheffield, should it not happen.
Brook is currently in the dark over whether his supposed next opponent Alexander will instead confirm rumours that he will fight Floyd Mayweather Jr on May 4 in Las Vegas.
If he does, then his contract with Brook will be broken and he will have to give up his IBF welterweight belt and allow mandatory challenger Brook to fight for it as a vacant title.
Brook had his heart set on taking Alexander's belt while the American was in the ring but told ESPN that if it is not to happen, he has other plans.
"There is no doubt about it, if he fights Floyd Mayweather, I will fight whoever is next in line, there is a chance it could be in Sheffield," Brook told Steve Bunce in his latest ESPN boxing podcast. "He will be stripped of his title, we're contracted to fight each other. Since I've been with Eddie [Hearn], everything has been running smooth. He's worked me into this position so we're mandatory for the title.
"My next fight will be for the title, with Devon Alexander or without him. It's been a long time coming. I'm 26, I'm in the best possible mental shape I could be. I'm ready to win the world title."
Hearn, Brook's promoter, believes Mayweather's claims that Alexander is the front runner to fight him could be a ploy to hurry along negotiations with potential opponent Robert Guerrero. On that front Brook admits he is in the dark again but believes he will know more once Hearn returns from America after this weekend - where he is going to watch Gavin Rees fight Adrien Broner for the WBC lightweight title.
He added: "I'm not sure what is going on, I should find out some positive information next week as Eddie Hearn is out at the Rees-Broner fight. I've been training 12/13 weeks away from my family over Christmas, I miss my little girl so I just want to get my hands on Devon Alexander, he's going to get it."
