DeGale sets sights on Froch clash

James DeGale has pleaded for a fight with Carl Froch before 'the Cobra' calls time on his career.

Froch is in the later stages of his career and has three fights in mind - his upcoming clash with Mikkel Kessler and rematches with Lucian Bute and Andre Ward - before hanging up his gloves.

Should Froch stick to that plan, it will mean there will be no all-British fight with DeGale. That would be a blow to Olympic gold medallist DeGale who has told Froch not to follow in the footsteps of Joe Calzaghe.

Froch spent some time calling out Calzaghe, but the Welshman opted for retirement. And DeGale feels a similar scenario could play out with him and the Nottingham super-middleweight.

Speaking to the Sun, DeGale said: "I know Froch was bitterly annoyed when Calzaghe quit boxing instead of fighting him, so he knows exactly what it is like to be swerved.

"Froch has his upcoming fight with Mikkel Kessler in May and has then targeted two rematches - one with Lucian Bute and another with Andre Ward, who beat him.

"I've read that after those three fights he will consider ending his career. All I am asking is for him to fight me before hanging up his gloves.

"Looking at Froch, he is not the kind of man to swerve anyone or anything.

"Froch was always calling out Calzaghe but never got that fight - and I think he would have beaten him at that stage.

"It would be great if Froch stayed around long enough for us to meet."
