Price books immediate Thompson rematch

British heavyweight David Price will get an immediate chance to avenge the first defeat of his professional career, after agreeing to a rematch with Tony Thompson on July 6 in Liverpool.

Price, 29, was surprisingly stopped in just the second round by Thompson at the Echo Arena last month, as the American picked up a career-reviving victory in their heavyweight meeting.

Now the duo will meet again, at the same venue, with Price looking to set the record straight - and insert himself back into the picture for an eventual world title fight.

"There was a rematch clause in the original contract, but it was still far from easy to make it happen," Price's promoter, Frank Maloney, said in a statement announcing the rematch. "Because it was such a big win for Thompson there was a lot of interest in him from rival promoters, but we got there and he has signed.

"There were other options for David also, but he and his trainer Franny Smith were adamant they wanted Thompson again."

The fight could prove one part of an intriguing summer for British boxing, with David Haye expected to announce his own return to the ring - widely tipped to come at the end of June - at a press conference on Thursday.
