Michael Norgrove passes away

Michael Norgrove has died nine days after collapsing in the ring following a fight against Tom Bowen.

The 31-year-old Zambian based in Woodford Green was stopped by referee Jeff Hinds in the fifth round after Norgrove appeared to be acting in an unusual way. Moments later, Norgrove hit the deck and received medical attention before being admitted to hospital, where it was revealed he had suffered a blood clot on his brain.

After turning professional three years ago the light-middleweight had clocked up five wins from five bouts. Unfortunately, his career was cut short as it was confirmed Norgrove had passed away on Saturday morning.

Speaking to BoxRec News, promoter Steve Goodwin - whose shows featured Norgrove's first five fights - said: "I am proud to have been associated with Michael. He was always a kind and warm human being, a very talented boxer and it is a very sad loss to everyone who ever met him. My thoughts go out to his family."

General secretary of the British Board of Boxing Control (BBBC) Robert Smith said: "We were informed of his death this morning. The whole sport feels for his family and we need to let it sink in. He was a nice little boxer - but forget boxing for now, it's very sad news indeed."
