Khan eyes 'perfect' Alexander bout

Amir Khan believes a December title bout with IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander would be the "perfect" scenario for a return to the ring.

Khan defeated Julio Diaz by a unanimous points decision in their catchweight 143lbs fight in Sheffield on Saturday, before stating that next time out he wants to challenge for a title.

The Bolton fighter has moved up through the weights since losing WBA super light-welterweight champion status to Danny Garcia in July 2012, and admitted that making weight at a lower level is beginning to take its toll.

However the 26-year-old believes a step up to 147lbs to fight Alexander, who defends his title against Britain's Lee Purdy in Atlantic City on May 18 following Kell Brook's withdrawal, would prove more suitable.

"It will be a world title fight next time out, whatever the weight," Khan said. "I am going to talk to my trainer Virgil Hunter to see what he thinks about Alexander.

"To me, it would be perfect because he has just moved up to 147lbs. It's just whether he would risk it, as champion.

"I will be more healthy at the weight and happier at making the weight. It's getting tougher making the weight as I get older and fill out. It's about making weight right. When you start killing yourself to make the weight, it does make you vulnerable.

"It makes you weaker and it is getting to that stage now in the 140 division. Maybe if I go up to 147 it will make me healthier at the weight and more resilient.

"I know that financially it will be better for Alexander to fight me. We know that because that's what we bring to the table. We are going to see what the options are but I know that I will be in a world title fight by the end of the year."
